BusCon 2016 recap – trends to watch

From electric buses to new transit maintenance technologies, here’s Matt Streem’s take on the hot trends at BusCon – the largest-ever bus industry trade show.

Thousands of bus industry professionals converged on BusCon 2016 in Indianapolis – fittingly nicknamed the “Crossroads of America.” We asked WeDriveU VP of Operations Matt Streem to share highlights.

Matt: One of the keys to WeDriveU’s success is our focus on innovation and on providing solutions and strategies to help our customers stay at the forefront of this dynamic industry. As premier innovators in their market segments, they value our team’s deep relationships and dedication to keeping them informed on emerging trends.

One of the keys to WeDriveU’s success is our focus on innovation and on providing solutions and strategies to help our customers stay at the forefront of this dynamic industry.

BusCon allows us to spend time with partners like ABC Companies, learning about their new products that keep us at the cutting edge of corporate mobility. As the largest bus trade show in North America, this year’s event also gave us an opportunity to explore other emerging products to enhance our solutions portfolio.

Q: What was your biggest a-ha moment?

Matt: This year, BusCon presented its first-ever Transit Maintenance Forum where we had the opportunity to learn about exciting new technologies and best practices in vehicle maintenance. As more of our customers adopt alternative fuel vehicles, it was fascinating to learn about emerging technology, like wireless and in-motion electric charging. Being able to charge an electric vehicle briefly at each stop is a game-changer resulting in double the range and a host of new applications for WeDriveU customers seeking green fleets.

Fleet innovations go hand-in-hand with our best-in-class maintenance programs that reflect our focus on providing safe and efficient solutions for customers. Our national partnership with Penske is the cornerstone of this strategy, allowing us to deliver robust maintenance solutions quickly and easily with minimal overhead. We are actively pursuing innovative new maintenance technologies like remote telemetry and smartphone-based diagnostic tools to ensure the certified maintenance technicians working on our fleet have the absolute best tools possible.

Q: What stood out on the show floor?

Matt: There is no doubt that the display from the REV Group was the centerpiece of the show. We had excellent discussions with their team and look forward to learning more about their future products. The New Flyer MiDi also looked great and represents a compelling vehicle option for WeDriveU customers seeking to move employees between buildings on their corporate campuses. We also had a great time getting behind the wheel of the new passenger transit vehicle from RAM Commercial and see it as a great fit for our Last-Mile commuter services between public transit and corporate worksites.

Q: What’s on the horizon that you’re jazzed to introduce to WeDriveU customers?

Matt: Wow, so many great things happening in mobility right now. The bus industry is definitely going green. We have been operating more alternative fuel vehicles for our customers and have built partnerships with some of the best manufacturers and converters of these vehicles in the business. We are excited to continue exploring emerging technologies around alternative fuels and ensure that we never stop providing the best solutions in the industry to the best customers in the world.
