Background
Nestled in the foothills of Oakland, California, Mills College is a nationally renowned, independent liberal arts college that fosters leadership, social responsibility, and creativity. The College ranks as one of the top Colleges in the country and one of the greenest colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review. U.S. News & World Report ranked Mills one of the top-tier regional universities in the country and second among colleges and universities in the West in its “Great Schools, Great Prices” category.
When it came to streamlining campus transportation, improving safety and connecting students and guests to rich cultural experiences througout the Bay Area, outsourcing to WeDriveU was the perfect solution..
Challenge
Mills College Department of Public Safety wanted a convenient and safe way to transport passengers to classrooms, food service locations, the book store and other campus facilities. The College also wanted to improve traffic flow and minimize the affects of limited parking on local neighborhoods.
Solution
WeDriveU has been the exclusive provider of drivers for Mills College’s fleet of shuttle buses since 2006. As a complete outsourcing solution, WeDriveU operates daily shuttles on set schedules* 16 hours a day Monday through Friday with shorter hours on weekends.
WeDriveU drivers are responsible for checking the student ID cards to verify their eligibility to ride the shuttles and collect ride tickets from non-Mills College students.
As a benefit of attending Mills College, students can take classes at the University of California Berkeley and utilize the shuttle service to travel the 11 mile distance between the Mills campus to Berkeley. For added convenience, the shuttle makes stops at the local mass-transit including an East Bay BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station, Kaiser hospital and riders can even arrange pick-ups and drop-offs at the local Lucky’s grocery store.
In addition to the inter-campus shuttle, WeDriveU operates an intra-campus shuttle in the evenings Monday to Friday to safely transport students around the campus.
Results
The Mills College shuttle program is a key part of the success of its outsourcing strategy. An article in The Campanil newspaper notes, “...the College outsources for various services on campus. Since 2007, Dining Services has been run by Bon Appétit Management Company, the shuttle is driven by WeDriveU chauffeurs, and the bookstore is managed through eFollet.”*
A key benefit to Mills College is the flexibility of outsourcing shuttle drivers to WeDriveU. Over the past four years of operation, the College has been able to tailor shuttles to meet changing demands, from adding shuttles for students during peak ridership periods to reducing shuttles and shaving costs during school breaks and other times of the year where there is less demand.
