How Employers are Changing the Way America Commutes
Recording spotlights top commuter options for university campuses and workplaces
A replay is now available for Best Workplaces for Commuters’ first webinar of 2020 detailing how organizations are reinventing the commute for employees and students.
Program Director Julie Bond kicked off the discussion by highlighting how employers on this year’s list are reshaping the commute to work for more than 1.5 million employees every day, with programs and services include ride-matching (70%), flexible work hours (57%), transit subsidies (55%), employee shuttles (26%), and other options.
Julie introduced 2020 winners Northwestern University, a WeDriveU shuttle client making its debut on this year’s list, and Tampa General Hospital.
Transportation Services Manager Paul Merkey described how Northwestern is improving mobility and sustainability with services for employees and students at 12 colleges and schools. Winner of the “National Award of Excellence” for two sites – its downtown Chicago and Evanston campuses – the university is one of only two organizations in Illinois to earn the honor awarded to 330 companies, sites, and universities honored across the U.S.
Hear about mode share by campus and a host of commuter options, including CTA bus and METRA train services, carpool discounts, flex work arrangements, free electric charging stations, bicycling amenities, and shuttles.
Now operated by WeDriveU, Northwestern shuttles serve 1.2 million rides annually, including intercampus routes and last-mile routes to/from METRA train stations and three hospital partners.
Paul remarked, “As I mentioned WeDriveU, last summer they took over the operations from our previous vendor and in the last 7-8 months they’ve been a really great partner for us and looking forward to continuing that going forward.”
